FINAL UPDATE: No PSPS due to improving weather conditions

Given improved weather conditions, PG&E has notified all customers that no Public Safety Power Shutoffs will be necessary. We had previously notified about 5,800 customers in 13 counties and two tribal communities that a safety shutoff might be needed. Groups of customers were notified Sunday and Monday that a PSPS would not be needed. At 11 a.m. Monday, we have notified the final group of customers that there will be no PSPS outages.

We thank our customers in Butte, Colusa, Fresno, Glenn, Kern Lake, Napa, San Benito, Shasta, Sonoma, Stanislaus, Tehama and Yolo counties for their patience.

PG&E closely monitors weather conditions, as well as real-time data from our weather stations and from the National Weather Service. We work quickly to keep customers and communities up to date and share information as it becomes available.

10/23 UPDATE: Potential PSPS this weekend decreased in scope due to improving weather conditions

Given improved weather conditions, PG&E on Sunday afternoon reduced the scope of its potential Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) for this weekend. About 1,000 customers in portions of Glenn, Colusa, Stanislaus and Yolo counties are no longer being considered for a safety shutoff. 

As of Sunday at 8 p.m., PG&E had not initiated a PSPS for any of the 5,800 customers that were being considered for shutoffs. 

PG&E meteorologists continue to monitor the dynamic weather conditions. Safety shutoffs are still possible for approximately 2,000 customers in portions of Kern, Fresno, San Benito, Napa, Lake, Sonoma, Tehama and Butte counties. PG&E has directly notified these customers of the potential shutoffs.

10/22 UPDATE: Potential PSPS this weekend decreased in scope due to improving weather conditions

Due to improving weather conditions on Saturday (Oct. 22), PG&E announced that it will no longer need to de-energize electric lines for safety to 2,000 customers and one tribal community in small portions of four counties.  Power shutoffs remain planned for Sunday, potentially impacting 2,200 customers in Butte, Colusa, Fresno, Lake, Napa, Sonoma, San Benito, Stanislaus, Tehama and Yolo counties, as well as one tribal community. In several of these counties, the Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) would affect fewer than 100 customers.   An additional 595 customers in Kern County could lose power on Monday. 

Customer notifications via text, email and automated phone call began about two days prior to the potential shutoffs. Customers can look up their address online to find out if their location is being monitored for the potential safety shutoff at pge.com/pspsupdates.

The PG&E Meteorology team continue to closely monitor weather conditions, as well as real-time data from our weather stations and from the National Weather Service. We are working quickly to keep customers and communities up to date and will share more information as it becomes available.

How Customers Can Prepare

•             Use a cell phone or hard-wired phone. Cordless phones do not work without electricity.

•             Use battery-operated flashlights, not candles, which may pose a fire hazard.

•             Unplug or turn off all electric and heat-producing appliances (e.g., air conditioners, washers and dryers, ovens, stoves, irons) to avoid overloading circuits. Overloaded circuits can be a fire hazard once power is restored.

•             Unplug televisions and computers that were in use when the power went out.

•             Leave a single lamp on to alert you when power returns.

•             Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed, and place extra containers of ice inside to preserve food. A full freezer will remain colder longer.

•             Notify your alarm company if you have an alarm system. Equipment can be affected by outages.

•             Turn your appliances back on one at a time when conditions return to normal.

•             Reset clocks, thermostats and other programmed equipment after power is restored.

Why PG&E Calls a PSPS

PG&E initiates a PSPS when the weather forecast calls for such severe weather that people’s safety, lives, homes and businesses may be in danger of wildfires.

As each weather situation is unique, PG&E carefully reviews a combination of factors when deciding if power must be turned off. These factors include:

•             Low humidity levels, generally 30% and below

•             A forecast of high winds, particularly sustained winds above 20 miles per hour and wind gusts above 30-40 miles per hour

•   Condition of dry material on the ground and low moisture content of vegetation

•             A Red Flag Warning declared by the National Weather Service

•             Real-time ground observations from our Wildfire Safety Operations Center and from our crews working across the service territory

This set of criteria is a first step that may lead to further analysis from PG&E’s meteorology team to determine if a PSPS is necessary.

•             At PG&E’s Safety Action Center (safetyactioncenter.pge.com) customers can prepare for emergencies. By using the “Make Your Own Emergency Plan” tool and answering a few short questions, visitors to the website can compile and organize the important information needed for a personalized family emergency plan. This includes phone numbers, escape routes and a family meeting location if an evacuation is necessary.
