Santa Clara, California – The San Francisco 49ers gave us a sneak peak at a potential quarterback platoon during the third preseason game of the 2021 season, defeating the Las Vegas Raiders 34-10.
Jimmy Garoppolo started the game for the 49ers, but rotated back and forth with rookie quarterback Trey Lance, for the first two drives of the game. Each of the first two drives resulted in a rushing touchdown, one by each quarterback.
I just wanted to get live action with it,” coach Kyle Shanahan said. “We’ve done it in practice a couple of times and this was the last time before we’re going to get in the regular season. So it’s the last time you can have the opportunity to do it. I kind of wanted to do it with this game.”
Garoppolo completed 4 of 7 passes for 64 yards to go with the two runs and one rushing touchdown.
The Raiders took a different approach, choosing to rest most of their starters. Backup quarterback Nathan Peterman got his third straight game of extensive action.Peterman went 18 for 29 for 175 yards with a 16-yard TD pass to Nick Bowers.
The San Francisco 49res open the regular season at Detroit on Sept. 12.
